Record chaser/holder in SC (tiger shark country)
sounds like Sc is where we need to go.
the beach shark fishing laws are pretty ridiculous in several areas in SC. The myrtle area being one of them. You don't want to be caught with anything bigger then a drum reel on the beach, because alot of the enforcement is left up to the interpretation of the officers, and they do write tickets, not just warnings. I am not positive but I think beach sharking at Hilton head may be a no no also.
Yeah, its illegal to shark fish off the beach here. Its one of those gray areas, though. Unless you admit you are shark fishing, or have half your wifes potroast laying next to you...I dont think they have a leg to stand on.
I really like the beaches up that way. The water, for example like at Edisto, always looks a little menacing. I imagine those big tigers patrolling out there under the camo of that brown choppy water.
Has there been a tiger over 10' taken from a Carolina beach within the past few years? I can't remember seeing one but there has to have been a few? The offshore fishing sounds amazing.
Welcome to SFSC
I havent heard of any Tigers coming off the beach, but we really dont have any knowledgeable shark fisherman on the beaches here. I know one guy that targets monsters, with the correct tackle and bait. He's landed a ton of lemons and blacktips, but cant weed through them to get a tiger. He's used larger baits, rays and sharks...but even the blacktips eat the huge baits. I recently directed him to another beach, but its too late in the season to land a tiger off the beach.
The offshore fishing is ok, but those bigger sharks are inshore. Most people are really surprised at how close I'm hitting these tigers, hammers and lemons. One of my shark holes is so close, you can see people walking on the beach. My other further shark spots are no more than 2 miles off the beach.
Amazing possibilities waiting to happen for the INTENSE well prepared land-based shark fishing freak with fire and desire in his veins.

The shark interest level in SC is at the bottom so its tough to get info in the area. I dont know a whole lot about Charleston, but I spoke with a DNR officer last summer and he said they caught, tagged and released quite a lot of tigers in Charleston Harbor. Thats pretty cool, I had no idea they were in there. But I still wouldnt fish it, I'd stick to the beach.
As for paddling big baits out, I'd get it out a little ways....but I'm no land based fisherman. Pick the days where the water looks green, not chocolate milk. And if you're fishing strictly for Tigers watch the moon phases....they disappear offshore of SC on the full moon. April and May the last 2 years here have been insane. So I'd imagine its the same just 50 miles north, but I've caught them all the way solid till Oct. Good luck, Stan. Hope that helps.
Walter Maxwell's record will not be broken if caught from a boat. As great an achievement as that would be, there is a big difference in chasing 1780 lbs in a boat vs fighting him on a pier or beach
I love it when people say it cant be done. It can, and it has been done a few times by different fisherman. The last time I had it was in 2011 and I released it because my entire charter battled it for 4 hours. I even called SCDNR (our records person) to prepare to drive 2 hours in with the scale. Looking back, it was a mistake....I probably should have dragged it in anyways just for publicity/business. I had another in 2009 that I thought would have broken it.
As for achievements----I respect Walter for being ahead of his time as a fisherman and somewhat "walking on the moon", some of his tactics were genius. But he was sitting on a loaded Atlantic ocean, where 1,000lb Tigers were caught almost on a daily basis. We dont have that benefit these days, catching a grander now is a lot more difficult than 50-60 years ago. If we lose a 1500lb Tiger, we dont just rig up and send another bait out knowing we'll get another chance soon. That's a lifetime shark. The Ocean is nowhere as near as loaded as it was back then. Its a great achievement to land a shark as big as he did, but you cant compare todays fishery to that.
